Growth is Never a Habit

Updated: Jul 15

How do you get from who you are to who you want to be? There are many best-selling books that will tell you that habits are how you get there. But these books cast a wide habit net which can delude a person into thinking that you can automate what you need to do to grow. I hate to break it to you, but growth is never automatic.

Habits can impact growth - good or bad - but habits do not produce growth. To ensure we are talking about the same thing in regard to a habit which when we ask people to define habit they usually say, “it is something I do without thinking,” or “it’s something that is automatic.”

A behavior that is a habit takes no intentional thought to perform. Habits help to preserve brain power so that energy can be used in higher value brain activity. Valuable habits help you maintain growth.

Habits are in the maintenance zone of the Growth Model.

Goals are often used as the barometer for achieving who you want to be or what you want to do in life. Many books are written on goals as well. How to achieve a target or something that is just beyond your reach. Setting and striving for a goal is important in growth; however, a goal is not a framework that you use to sustain constant growth. It is a framework you use to reach for a previously unattained result.

A goal is something you aim for it is something that has a starting line, finish line and dead line. Climbing fifteen 14,000ft peaks in a year is a goal. You can fail at reaching a goal. When you fail to reach a goal, where do you land? On the floor of your streaks.

Streaks are the intentional activity you do daily to constantly consistently grow. Reading at least one paragraph daily is a streak. You are intentional, deliberate and consciously choosing to do that activity daily. You never miss. Because the action is laughably simple your brain has a hard time rejecting it and convincing you that you are too busy, or too tired, or too whatever. The streak is the floor on which you stand to reach your goals. Habits and routines hang from the ceiling of a streak.

Growth is a conscious activity.
